Marilyn Monroe is the easy answer to a question like “Who is your beauty icon?”  She had it all: the platinum blonde hair, the full red lips, cat eyes that caused women to fight with their husbands if a man was caught dead looking too long.
But after seeing My Week With Marilyn, I can see that she didn’t actually radiate the confidence that is the reason why so many people call her an icon.  In fact, insecurity ran deep in her blood.  But the thing I admire about Marilyn in her connection with herself.  She knew exactly what she wanted and how to get it.  She knew who was staring.  She knew her dress was a little too tight.  She knew, and if she cared, she didn’t show it until she was back home.

When I’m in a hurry, or just plain lazy (coughEVERYDAYcough) I rely on these goold ol’ standbys to have me looking presentable:

FACE:

Clinique Acne Solutions Clearing Concealer – I have mild acne, and on days when it’s looking a little worse for the wear I dab this concealer on any red spots.  It contains salicylic acid, and so far I haven’t seen it IMPROVE my skin, but it doesn’t make it worse, so…

Estee Lauder Natural Finish Makeup (mixed with moisturizer and Benefit High Beam, my reliable homemade tinted moisturizer)

Sephora Mineral Loose Powder Foundation (I dust this all over my face if I’m feeling oily; it’s very sheer, almost translucent)

Yves Saint Laurent Touche Eclat – I use this under my eyes and around my nose to brighten and conceal.

The Body Shop Hot Brights Blush in 01 – now discontinued (I think), it comes with two shimmery blushes – one hot pink, one light baby pink, perfect for highlighting and blending together to create the perfect flush for my fair skin.

The Body Shop Shimmer Eye Shadow – I use a shimmery champagne shade all over my lids, and then as a highlighter on my browbones, inner and outer corners, and sometimes even along my cheekbones if my High Beam isn’t near by.

Clinique Lash Doubling Mascara (OR Maybelline Lots of Lashes Great Lash Mascara)

Rimmel Exaggerate Eye Definer in Noir long my lash lines

Love & Toast Lip Balm in Vanilla Chai

CoverGirl Outlast Lipstain

Here’s my regime:

I like to keep it simple, because my skin is so sensitive and if I introduce it to new products or too many at once, there’s a good chance it will ERUPT.

Morning:

Clinique Liquid Facial Soap Mild (it says it’s fragrance-free, but I actually find it has a mild scent that I love! It totally wakes me up.)

IF I’m using a toner, I use The Body Shop Sensitive Skin Toner

Aveeno Positively Radiant Daily Moisturizer SPF 30 (I love this!  The scent is really appealing, it brightens my whole face, and the SPF count is really high).

Night:

Klorane Wild Cornflower Eye Make Up Remover (it’s a little pricey, but well worth it – I’m on my second bottle.  It’s a cool blue color, so you know exactly how much you’ve poured on to the cotton pad and don’t waste any.  The smell is strange, but I like it.)

I use an Avene facial cleanser at night…stupid, I know, but since I’m not at home at the moment and therefore not close to my bathroom, I can’t look at the bottle and I’ve forgotten the name.  All I know is that it’s a cream cleanser for acne prone skin.  Again, very pricey, but I LOVE Avene and it’s one of the only brands that doesn’t break me out.  Completely worth it.

Am I the only one that uses their day moisturizer at night?  Well, I do, and I don’t care if that’s weird :P.  I guess I don’t really need the SPF, but I find that the more you use this moisturizer, the more you see the “Positively Radiant” effect — it really does brighten and soften the face.

Skin Deep

A cheap-as-chips way to feel refreshed and brighten your skin: pour some baking soda into the palm of our hand, add little drops of water and mix until formed into a paste, and scrub over your face – I love the way my skin feels after this!
